As a business owner, I sometime struggle with motivation. When that happens, I often turn to poetry so today I thought I'd share some of my fav motivational poems and why I love them.

This past Tuesday was World Poetry Day. The day was established by UNESCO to celebrate one of society’s most important forms of cultural and linguistic expression and identity. As a business owner, I sometime struggle with motivation to continue doing what I have chosen to do. On the days where it gets tough, I turn to poetry to get me through. So today, I thought I’d share some of my favourite motivational poems. I am partial to female authors or authors of colour… for obvious reasons – if the reasons are not obvious, I am a female of colour. Poetry is one of those things that you need to resonate with to like. I usually go for more romantic poetry about a love so strong it can overcome an Indian mother’s “no” but like I said, some days I need pure motivation. So here they are, pieces of my go-to motivational poems.

Starting off strong we have Still I Rise By Maya Angelou

“Just like moons and like suns,

With the certainty of tides,

Just like hopes springing high,

Still I'll rise.”

This poem talks of a person who despite challenges, will rise with the certainty of the sun and moon rising. How poetic! Especially if you have a thing for the moon like I do. This person talks about rising using the gifts of their ancestors and I really resonate with that because of the struggles of my family’s past generations.

“Seeing tears form in her dark, dark eyes,

he asks: “Why so sad?”

“Because you are shrinking.”

“But I am not sad,” Grandfather replies.

“Why not?”

“Because you are growing.””

This one is about a grandchild who is growing up. It’s not implicitly motivational but here’s why I love it. This poem reminds me that I am always growing – whether I feel small, or I feel like the world around me is shrinking and closing in, I am growing. This poem also reminds me that as I am getting used to running my business, it’s not complacency, but personal growth that will push me to be more successful.

“soft enough

to offer life

tough enough

to drown it

away”

This one, while being short, is so important. It reminds me to be humble while also reminding me of my strength. There are greater forces around me, but this poem reminds me that I am strong enough to be among those forces.

I know I said I am partial to female and POC authors but this poem is just too motivational to not include in this post. This is Dreams By Langston Hughes.

“Hold fast to dreams

For if dreams die

Life is a broken-winged bird

That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams

For when dreams go

Life is a barren field

Frozen with snow.”

A dream of what my future looks like is why I started my business. This reminds me of that dream and all the progress I have made towards it. This poem tells me that holding onto my dreams is definitely the move.

And last but not least, Don’t Quit By M. Tarun Prasad

“When times are hard, you might stop for a bit,

But it’s not over until the moment you quit.”

This one is a bit self-explanatory… but I’m going to explain anyways. This poem tells you to keep going even when things aren’t looking good. It reminds me that there will be hard times but if I stick to it and stay strong, I will reach my dreams.

So there they are in all their glory. These are just a few of the incredible poems that are out there. I hope you find one that you love as much I love these! Poetry is a language in itself and as a business owner, I can appreciate the time and effort is takes to craft a piece of work as rich as a poem. Happy World Poetry Day!
